Having ridden with James for  years now I've come respect not only his ridding skills but his recoverery, and I've also made a great friend.

The Next Right Thing takes us out the Panoramic Hwy to Stinson Beach. Then we'll head back inland via Fairfax Bolinas Rd to Sir Francis Drake Blvd. Then we head up Nicasio Valley Rd to Point Reyes-Petaluma Rd to Hicks Valley Rd. to Marshall-Petaluma Rd and into Valley ford. Here we can catch our breath and fill our tanks and we're going to need it because we're just getting started.
From here we head north on SR-1 [Shoreline Hwy] through Bodega Bay up to Stewarts Point, again taking a break and topping off our tanks. And we find ourselves warmed up at the beginning of one of the best rides around, Stewarts Point Skaggs Springs Rd. the spiritual experience.

  1. This isn’t a race; though to the untrained eye, it may on occasion appear otherwise.
  2. We travel at a brisk pace that an experienced rider should enjoy. But don’t worry there’s room for less seasoned riders.
  3. We always wait at ALL turns on the ride route for the group to re-form and verify we haven’t lost anybody.
  4. Individually, we should always travel at a pace that’s within our capabilities and comfort level for the current conditions.
  5. If you’re holding someone up, don’t stress, we’re all friends. WAIT for a straight away and wave them past.
  6. If someone is holding you up IN THE CORNERS, Wait and give them a little space, than pass them safely in the straight.

On a detailed map, the line doesn't get any more squiggly than this.  And your anticipation grows.

Westbound from the town of Fairfax:  Fairfax is a small community in southern Marin County on the very edge of an extremely populated area just west of Interstate 101.  North of the Golden Gate Bridge, the money seems to drip off the hillsides.  The beautiful thing is years ago someone very smart created a place called the Mt Tamalpais State Game Refuge.  And virtually no one lives there.  Fairfax Bolinas Road skirts across the northern border of this state game refuge.

Sir Francis Drake Blvd

Here we get a chance to just enjoy the scenery. This road has to much traffic to do anything but enjoy the views as we cruise the redwoods and cool off a bit. As we head towards the coast.

This is a fun but short trip around a hillside that rises a few feet above the surrounding countryside with a terrific view at the top.

Marshall Petaluma Road

.

expect a bumpy two lane little used back road.  The road is old, plain and simple.  While the road itself curves back and forth, if you take this at a brisk pace, you'll notice the bumps less and enjoy the ride.

On the other hand, if your vertebrae are in great health, then tool along and enjoy the countryside.  Like much of Marin County, the wonderment of this road is of course the small homesteads along the way.

Highway 1

Hwy 1 commonly has cops seen at least one an hour so watch the speed (and the passing).  Somewhat encumbered by 'slow' tourists, campers (and just about everyone for that matter) by sportbike standards, take caution when passing (especially that sportbike pass).
